Wastewater treatment is provided by 2 major treatment plants and 4 package plants.

Treatment Plants

Gary L. Kron Water Reclamation Facility is a 20 million gallon a day (design capacity) facility located on Lakeshore Blvd. in Mentor. It provides wastewater treatment for the central portion of the county.

Madison Wastewater Treatment Facility is a 5 million gallon a day (design capacity) facility located on Cashen Road in Madison Township. It provides wastewater treatment for most of the eastern portion of the County.

Both of these major treatment facilities discharge their effluent to Lake Erie and are operated by treatment plant team members 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Package Plants

Heatherstone Wastewater Treatment Plant is located on Riverside Dr. in Painesville Township, and provide service to several residential subdivisions in the central portion of the county between the east and west service areas. Our Heatherstone Plant discharges its effluent to the Grand River.

Rio Grande Wastewater Treatment Plant is located on Painesville-Warren Rd. in Concord Township, and provides service to the Rio Grande Subdivision.  In 2004, we received a Research and Development grant from the Ohio Water Development Authority for the installation of a Membrane Reactor (MBR) process as a demonstration of innovative technology to achieve improved treatment of wastewater serving residential subdivisions. At the time, the MBR facility was put into operation as the first of its kind in the State of Ohio. The MBR facility replaced the existing 30-year old activated sludge treatment plant.  Our Rio Grande Plant discharges its effluent to the Big Creek.

Sunshine Acres Wastewater Treatment Plant is located on Lester Rd. in Leroy Township, and provide service to a residential subdivision in Leroy Township. Our Sunshine Acres Plant discharges effluent to a tributary of East Creek.

Dodd Hill Wastewater Treatment Plant is located on Dodds Landing Rd. in Willoughby Hills, and provides service to a residential subdivision in Willoughby Hills.  Our Dodd Hill Plant discharges its effluent to the Chagrin River. o   Our Heatherstone, Rio Grande, Sunshine Acres and Dodd Hill Plants are fully automated; however, they require daily maintenance by the treatment plant team members.  They are all monitored on a full-time basis through a telemetry system that reports critical operational data to a receiving station at the water reclamation and treatment facilities.
