Lake County East Water Plant Shore Protection

3/7/2023

The purpose of this project is to protect vital drinking water infrastructure from Lake Erie shore erosion by rehabilitating the shore line and bluff.

The Lake County East Water District Water Treatment Plant is located near Bacon Road in Painesville Twp., Ohio. The plant is supplied with raw water via a pump station on the shore of Lake Erie.

Erosion of the Lake Erie shoreline is progressing at an alarming rate. The bank has eroded to within 20 feet of the telecom lines that provide communication between the water plant and the raw water pump station. More importantly, two water mains that feed the water treatment plant with up to 9 million gallons per day are only 50 feet from the bank. Since 2017 the bank has eroded approximately 60 feet. This equates to nearly 10 feet of bank erosion per year. Most of the erosion has occurred in the past 2 years.
