Lake County Commissioners Expand Partnership with the Lake Humane Society
PAINESVILLE, Ohio, July 17, 2026 – The Lake County Commissioners wish to inform the public of an expanding partnership with the Lake Humane Society as part of our ongoing commitment to animal welfare and community collaboration.
Beginning next week, a team from the Lake Humane Society will be onsite at the Lake County Dog Shelter to assist staff and ensure the health, comfort, and well‑being of the animals currently in care on a weekly basis. Planned efforts include:
- Evaluating all animals in the shelter for general and easily identifiable health concerns.
Assessing animals for signs of anxiety and stress. - Evaluating the behavior and temperament of dogs using the SAFER assessment on animals that staff are comfortable handling.
- Conducting heartworm tests on dogs that are safe to handle for a blood draw.
- Assisting shelter staff with providing the appropriate atmosphere and enrichment items for dogs to improve comfort and stimulation.
- Dogs that will be put up for adoption will also be spade/neutered by the Lake Humane Society or other partners beginning in the coming weeks.
“We are encouraged by the positive steps Lake County leadership has taken to strengthen operations at the Dog Shelter and are optimistic about what we can accomplish together moving forward. While Lake Humane Society and the Dog Shelter serve different roles in our community, we share a common commitment to the well-being of the dogs in our care. We look forward to continuing our partnership and working together to ensure every dog receives the humane care they deserve,” said Duke Murphy, Interim Executive Director of the Lake Humane Society.
The Commissioners extend their appreciation to the staff and volunteers at the Lake Humane Society for their dedication and cooperation. Together, we remain committed to ensuring the highest standard of care for animals in Lake County.
