PAINESVILLE, Ohio, July 2, 2025– Lake County is proud to announce the launch of “VISION 2050”, the county’s first comprehensive plan in over six decades. Led by the Lake County Board of Commissioners, the Lake County Planning Commission, and their consulting partner Envision, this forward-thinking plan aims to shape the future of Lake County through 2050.

As the region faces rapid changes and emerging challenges, VISION 2050 provides a strategic blueprint to guide sustainable growth while preserving the community’s unique character. The plan addresses critical areas including economic development, agriculture, housing, industry, office and retail spaces, transportation, parks, recreation, education, and environmental stewardship—focusing on our relationship with Lake Erie, the Grand River, Chagrin River, Mentor Marsh, and other vital natural features.

“This plan marks a new chapter for Lake County,” said Commission President Richard J. Regovich. “It’s about thoughtful planning for growth while protecting what makes our community special. Importantly, VISION 2050 is designed to be inclusive and community-focused—not top-down—empowering local communities to thrive.”

Commissioner John T. Plecnik emphasized, “In reviewing the comprehensive plans for Mentor and our other municipalities, I learned that Lake County had not published a new comprehensive plan in 65 years To quote Benjamin Franklin, ‘If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.’ That is why I proposed a new comprehensive plan for Lake County, and with my colleagues’ support and leadership, that proposal will culminate in VISION 2050.”

Commissioner Morris W. Beverage III added, “VISION 2050 will help us make informed decisions today that will benefit generations to come.”

Public input is vital to shaping the future of Lake County. Over the coming months, planning staff, local officials, and stakeholders will be out at county fairs and festivals gathering community feedback. Additionally, residents can participate through an online survey here.
