Financial Assistance Programs

Emergency Financial Assistance

The Lake County Veterans Service Commission (VSC) provides EMERGENCY financial assistance on a TEMPORARY basis for basic living expenses such as: rent or mortgage, utility bills, food, etc. Other needs may be considered on a case-by-case basis. The assistance is available to veterans, survivors, or dependent children.

Financial Assistance is mandated by Ohio law. The VSC manages our Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Relief Fund for unexpected and dire financial emergencies: sometimes things happen, and the VSC may be able to help. This assistance is not intended to supplement income or provide major home improvements, especially when equity or assets are available, but if you’re in need, apply, always!

Stated simply, it’s to ensure there is food on the table, a roof overhead, utilities on, and maintain a safe and secure quality of life.

If you are a Veteran, a surviving spouse of a Veteran, or if you know a Veteran or a surviving spouse of a Veteran experiencing financial distress, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our office.

Eligibility

  • The veteran is required to have active federal service for purposes other than training and to have been discharged under honorable conditions. Proof of service (DD 214) is required.
  • The applicant must have resided in Lake County for at least 3 months immediately preceding the application date. Proof of residency is required.
  • A definite financial need must be demonstrated. The Lake County Veterans Service Commission considers various factors when determining financial need, including, but not limited to, income, living expenses, and liquid assets.
