Probate Court - Lake County, Ohio

Thank you for your interest in the Lake County Probate Volunteer Visitor and Guardian Program. Volunteers such as yourself can make a difference in the lives of vulnerable senior citizens who are no longer able to care for themselves. You will be an advocate who enhances the quality of their lives.
The Lake County Probate Court believes that all persons are entitled to be treated with respect and dignity should they become incompetent or incapacitated. In Lake County, we are trying to address the growing needs of our elderly citizens. Our program is dedicated to improving the lives of those in need by providing trained, qualified, volunteer visitors and guardians. It's very difficult to obtain volunteers, but we all have a responsibility to be concerned and to assist our neighbors especially in time of need.
Choosing to become a volunteer visitor means choosing to have a profound impact on the community. Volunteer visitors give seniors the opportunity for companionship and to socialize. Such human interaction can mean all the world to the wards who are often residing in nursing homes and group homes. Volunteers also ensure that wards are being properly cared for and guarantee them a high quality of life.
Not only do the elderly of the community benefit from this program, but the volunteer visitors benefit as well. Through visiting elderly members of the community, one gains valuable experience and can explore possible career alternatives.
Because volunteers may have access to sensitive information, there are several basic requirements to protect both wards and volunteers:

         - Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age
         - Volunteers must be an Ohio resident and have a high school diploma or equivalent
         - Volunteers cannot have a criminal record
