Military Tax Deferment

    What is the Military Tax Deferment?

    Ohio House Bill 390 allows an Ohio National Guard Member or Reserve Member of the U.S. Armed Forces called to active duty due to the events of September 11th 2001, to defer paying his or her property taxes until six months after termination of his or her active duty. No penalties or interest will accrue during the deferral period. The law allows for deferring payment of both real estate property taxes and manufactured home taxes.

    Who is eligible?

    1. Members of the Ohio National Guard or a reserve component of the United States Armed Forces called to active duty under Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Noble Eagle or the Ohio Governor’s Directive of September 28, 2001.
    2. The spouse of such a member.
    3. Such a member jointly with that member’s spouse or dependant parent.
    4. The dependent parent of such a member who dies during such duty.

    How does someone apply?

    Call the Lake County Treasurer's Office at 440-350-2516 to have an application mailed to you. Complete the application, sign, and attach a copy of military orders.

    Applicant will receive written notification from the Treasurer’s office verifying that he or she qualifies for the deferment. If taxes are paid through a mortgage company, a copy of the notification will be forwarded to the mortgage company.

    Upon release from duty the applicant should provide a copy of release documents to County Treasurer within six months from date of release to establish a payment plan for deferred taxes. No penalties or interest will be charged. The first payment will be due seven months after release from service.
