SIGNS OF ABUSE AND NEGLECT

Neglect

 

Physical Indicators

 

·       Consistent Hunger:  distended stomach, emaciated

·       Inappropriate clothing for weather:  no winter coat, boots

·       Lack of Medical Treatment

·       Poor hygiene, habitually unwashed

·       Lack of Housing

·       Abandonment

 

·       Consistent lack of Supervision

·       Child not being watched while doing dangerous activities

·       Tired and listless child

·       Unattended physical problems (i.e. colds, flu, mental health needs)

·       Not attending School

·       Failure to Thrive

 

Behavioral Indicators

 

·       Begging or stealing food

·       Constant fatigue, falling asleep during activities

·       Frequent absences or tardiness from school (dropout)

·       Aggressive behaviors

·       Attention seeking behavior

 

·       Parents have Drug and Alcohol concerns

·       Family is isolated, lacks social skills

·       History of Abuse/Neglect as child

·       Not interested in child’s activities

·       Child reports no caretaker, lack of medical needs, etc…
