About the Judge

Judge Colleen A. Falkowski, Biographical Information

Judge Falkowski was elected to the Domestic Relations bench in November 2002 for her term which began January 2, 2003. Prior to being elected to the bench, Judge Falkowski served as a Lake County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney from 1979 to 1988. As an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, she litigated issues pertaining to paternity and child support enforcement in both civil and criminal cases in the Lake County Juvenile Court and Domestic Relations Court.

In 1988, Judge Falkowski left the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office to accept a position as the Staff Attorney for the Lake County Department of Human Services, Child Support Enforcement Division (CSEA). At that time, the area of family law began to expand dramatically to allow the CSEA to administratively review child support orders and establish parentage. Judge Falkowski was instrumental in developing legal procedures to ensure that the Child Support Enforcement Agency met and fulfilled its statutory obligations. She returned to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office in 1997 to accept the position of Supervising Attorney for the Office’s Child Support Division. Judge Falkowski continued to serve in this position until elected to the bench.

In 2004, Judge Falkowski implemented a Court Mediation Program to aid families in jointly resolving parenting issues. No fees are charged for cases referred to the Lake County Domestic Relations Court Mediation Department. This program has already begun to experience success. Judge Falkowski also requires parents to attend a family educational program prior to final hearings in actions for divorce, legal separation and dissolution of marriage where minor children are involved, to educate parents on how to minimize the negative impact that these proceedings may have on children.

Judge Falkowski received her undergraduate degree from Ursuline College and her Juris Doctorate degree from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. She has always been an advocate of community education and has recently joined the faculty of Lakeland Community College as a family law instructor for the college’s paralegal course.

Judge Falkowski brings twenty-three years of experience with families to the bench and a commitment to serving the citizens of Lake County.
